The white cloth coat (sukmana) worn by the farmers of the regions near Krakow is the most popularized Polish folk dress. The Polish national hero Tadeusz Kosciuszko swore his famous oath of fidelity to democratic principles in 1794 wearing such a coat.

The "kierezja" coat once worn by farmers and townspeople was until recently the common coat in the areas east and north of Krakow.
